About Assisi

Symbol of AssisiAssisi was in origin a small Umbrian village; it became a Roman colony only in 399 BC with the name of Asisium. The Christian religion appeared in the city at the beginning of the third century, brought by San Rufino martyr, who became the first bishop of Assisi. St. Francis, whose life and work has put a mark on the city's and humanity's history, was born in Assisi between 1181 and 1182. Also known as St. Francis of Assisi, he is one of the most popular and venerated saints in the world and his tomb is a pilgrimage destination for tens of thousands of devotees who come to Assisi every year. Thanks to St. Francis, the city of Assisi became the capital of peace. St. Francis' day is celebrated on October, 4th, and the saint is the patron saint of Italy.

  • Basilica of St. Maria degli Angeli with the Portiuncula - Inside the Basilica (1569-1579) is the Portiuncula, the chapel where St. Francis of Assisi gathered in prayer, which is the center of Franciscan spirituality
  • Eremo delle Carceri on Mount Subasio - It is where St. Francis of Assisi and his followers gathered to pray and meditate. Located 4 kilometers far from Assisi, at 791 meters a.s.l. on Mount Subasio, the Eremo (Hermitage) delle Carceri is located near some natural caves, which were already visited by hermits in the early Christian period
  • Church of San Damiano
  • Church of St. Maria in Rivotorto
  • St. Benedetto Abbey - Founded in the X century on the slopes of Mount Subasio, was destroyed in 1399 and restored in the XVII century. There

Monuments
  • Roman amphitheater - Dating back to the I century AD, with its elliptical structure, its arch of travertine and its arena, which is delimited by a garden.
  • Rocca Maggiore - Located on top of the hill and overlooking the valley, it was built in medieval times and subsequently destroyed in 1198 by a popular revolt against the Duke Conrad of Urslingen, tutor of the future emperor Frederick II. The Rocca Maggiore was rebuilt in 1356 by the Cardinal Albornoz, basically following the original design; the polygonal tower was built in 1458; the cylindrical bastion to the side of the entrance was completed in 1538. It seems that Frederick Barbarossa and Frederick II (when he was still a child) lived in the fortress.
  • Piazza del Comune - This area became the focus of the city only in the XIII century. The northern side of the square is centered on the Temple of Minerva: to its left, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo was built in the XIII century; the Palace was then restored and equipped with battlements in 1927 and with the adjacent Torre del Popolo (the civic bell tower) in 1305. The base of the bell tower includes the reference measurements of bricks, tiles and fabrics that were used in the city in the XIV century. The southern side of the square was completed during the construction of the Palazzo dei Priori (1275-1493). The Fonte della Piazza, with its three sculpted lions on the eastern side, is dating back to the XVI century, while the Post Office, on the west side, is dating back to 1926.
