Costacciaro is a small town in the Province of Perugia, located within the Regional Park of Monte Cucco. The massif of Monte Cucco is one of the most spectacular areas of the Umbria-Marche Apennines: a protected area since 1995, it's the park of groundwater, karst caves (the most important in Europe) and large unspoiled woods. In the park wolves, golden eagles, hawks, wild boars and hares are living together. Costacciaro was built by the people of Gubbio around the year 1250 or so, in order to better defend their territory. On the hill's top there was the most important castle of the village, owned by a man named Stacciaro. Initially, the city's name was Castrum Collis Stacciarii but, in 1300, the name was changed to Castrum Costacciarii.
