Massa Martana is a city in the province of Perugia. It seems that today's Massa Martana was the ancient Roman
Vicus ad Martis (or
Vicus Martanus or
Marta) on the Via Flaminia. The city area and its surroundings, in fact, are rich in Roman remains, first and foremost a catacomb, the only example of underground Christian cemetery yet discovered in Umbria.
Massa Martana is predominantly an ancient medieval village: the origin of its famous castle dates back to Lombard age, between the seventh and eighth centuries. Known as Massa during the Papal State, the city took its current name in 1863. The village came back to life after the restoration works, which have been carried out to repair the damages caused by the 1997 earthquake.
