About Orvieto

Symbol of OrvietoThe city of Orvieto, in the province of Terni, is located in the south-western Umbria, near the border with Lazio. It is placed high up on a tuff cliff overlooking the valley below, where two rivers flow right before they dive into the Tiber river. This huge platform of tufa was created by the eruptions of some volcanoes. Called Volsinii by the Romans, the town was located near an Etruscan temple, Fanum Voltumnae, which was visited each year by the inhabitants of Etruria who came together to celebrate religious rites. In 264 BC, the town was destroyed by the Romans, who deported its inhabitants to the shores nearby the Bolsena lake, where the new town of Volsinii Novi (Bolsena) was created. The medieval citadel of Ourbibentos was later re-founded on the rock of Orvieto and, after several centuries, it became the new city with the name of Urbs Vetus (old Town).
